I used the alternating herringbone approach on the football of my first kayak. Since then I always stripped from the sheer until the strips reach the point where the ends are on the bottom of the hull rather than the sides. I then fit strips from the keel out to meet the existing strips.

The reasons I do that is that it saves me a lot of time and makes it easier to get neat glue joints. Because the strips are straight, they don't need much pressure to hold them tight against the preceding strip. Since I build stapleless and mostly use masking tape and a few clamps to hold the strips, this is a big issue.

If you continue stripping from the outside towards the keel, the curve across width of the strips becomes severe as you move onto the bottom of the hull and I find that I need to spend some time with the heat gun to bend the strip before fitting. In fact it takes about as long with the heat gun as it takes to bevel and fit the strip.

I have found it is much quicker and I have no worries about the tension in the strip pulling the glue joint apart before the glue sets.
