The George Dyson original from which this is adapted has a non lifting rudder which is as deep as the keel line.

I think the rudder that you see on Dysons are partly because it is easier to add a rudder to a SOF than a skeg.

There is enough rocker in the hull though, and I knocked the chines out of it. I think it will turn OK.

The general feeling from long distance rough water speed paddlers seems to be that a rudder is better for speed. I suppose one can just concentrate on forward power, and in surf skis, some of them can be so tippy that the rudder is needed for turning as you do not want to slow down. For me though, the added complexity of the installation and all the crap hanging off the stern is a turn-off.

Until recently I never had either skeg or rudder on my boats, but just recently I find my reasons for being out on the water changing somewhat more from the physical test, to the social outing, and the skeg is nice sometimes when you just want to mooch along shooting the breeze without distraction.

Also, having a skeg or rudder can be useful if other paddlers are using your boats. Fewer complaints.
