It is possible to add one after if you decide you need it.

The reason I added one to the N Star is for big downwind and off the wind days, and it has IMHO added to the magnificence of an already wonderful downwind ride. Also, the rocker on the NS makes it a bit of a handful off the wind for lighter paddlers and the skeg keeps things manageable for them (probably not a real issue with the lower volume of the F Star).

Rob, you know that I am one of your biggest fans, and that my North Star is far and away my favourite boat, (and I have many), but many of us are never going to be the most proficient of paddlers, and just want to get out and do the best we can, when we can, with the least amount of embarrassment in a crowd, and the maximum enjoyment each and every time we manage to get on the water, which for some is not that often.

Bob, if you are one of the paddlers described above, install a skeg.

If you are determined to get out lots and actively develop your skill, or you are already hot stuff, don't bother.

Almost any sea kayak you can buy has either a skeg or a rudder, sometimes both, no matter how well they are known to be trackers. Ask yourself why.

It is scary to contradict Rob Macs, but I am going to hit the post button.
