For our purposes a low angle block plane gets the most use.

It's easy to get fanatical about sharpening ... so unless ya want to do that ... I'd keep it simple. I use the Brian Burns jig ... but lots of folk use the Veritas jigs or something similar and cheaper. You'll get a better edge if ya flatten the backs first. Cut wood and touch-up the edge frequently. If you have edge tools with hard steel ... such as the Rockwell 63-65 Japanese stuff ... be prepared to spend some time to get the initial edge.
