Strip: staining

I'm starting a new build (a Guillemot) and have some design ideas in mind. I'm planning to try the ebonizing technique Bill H. posted about a couple of months ago for the darker areas but I also want to make some areas lighter. I know I could use a different wood species to accomplish this but I'm wondering about the use of a water-based stain (I know oil stains interfere with the epoxy curing). I used a Benjamin Moore product (Arborcoat) to stain my house siding this summer and it got me thinking about its suitability for a kayak. Benjamin Moore calls it an alkyd/acrylic product.

Does anyone know for certain that this won't work with epoxy?
