Something else to consider is the LAW. In Washington state the following is required:
"Two tiedowns if the article is longer than 10 feet (3.04 meters), and one additional tiedown for every 10 feet (3.04 meters) of article length, or fraction thereof, beyond the first 10 feet (3.04 meters) of length. "
That would mean three straps for almost all Sea kayaks.
Be legal or be ticketed. - Just stay away from a ticked off officer or they will find everything in the book to get you for.

I tie at the two rack points (around the rack bar) and usually a bow and stern line. That satisfies the law and isn't to much work.
