: Historic Greenland kayaks do not have a lip. The tuilik was tied to
: the coaming so tightly that it would seal out the water. That's
: one of the reasons why rolling was so important- really hard to
: get out again.

: I would at least put a riser on because it would give you the
: option of using a spray deck of some kind without as great a
: fear of entrapment. IMO- kayaking is WAY more fun when water
: from your paddle isn't running all over your legs every time you
: dip your paddle in the water.

: I really like a composite coaming of some kind- but I didn't like
: all of the steps of "Vaclav's method." On mine I made
: a sacrificial mold of minicell temporarily glued to the hull
: with repositionable spray adhesive, then I covered it with
: aluminum foil I had coated with mold release wax. I used biaxial
: CF tape, when I was done laying it up I pulled the foam away,
: leaving the coaming.

Hello again Mike,

I think I initially mis-understood how you did your coaming. I now see, I think, that you did not do a riser before installing your foam mold. Sounds like a good idea to me because installing the riser itself is quite a bit of work. What specific adhesive did you use to hold the foam, and how did you clean it off the hull after removing the foam? Did you consider using packing tape as a mold release rather than tin foil and release agent?

Best regards,

Allan Edie
