Susan,
when painting or varnishing you will always get a smoother finish if you roll on and follow immediately with a brush for 'tipping'. Use an 1/8" napp roller, like the West Systems 7" yellow ones, which I find at West Marine. I then cut them in half and use these with a short roller and small tray I buy from Menards. I mostly use foam brushes, and mix the products in a plastic measuring cup with gradiants on them, also purchased from West Marine, although you can get all of this stuff from places like Raka marine on-line.
