Here is a link to a video so you can see it's not just a small rock he hit- it's an entire island. It isn't like he can say, "oops, I didn't see that."

Those mooring balls are in 60 feet of water. It falls off very sharply there. Ironically, right at those rocks is the famous wreck of the Rhone, a former mail ship that sank in a storm back in the days of steam.
