: So..... I am finishing my second strip build (pictures coming
: shortly), and I have the bug. I am thinking about my next
: project. For grins, I am thinking about building the lightest
: yak I can. The usage would stricly be on an inland lake,
: launching from my dock, never on rocks or a car top. If it . . .

I built a 12'/3.7 m ply canoe which I use for smallish lakes, no glass, 3 mm sheers and bilge planks and 6 mm bottom. Came out at 22 lb/10 kg (I could easily have lopped off 10%) and an easy carry for an ancient such as myself. The lighter the boat the easier it is to baby it! It could have been made as a sof-top kayak as Bill suggested. After a few years there are no dings or serious marks. With ply construction the cross-grain strength is taken care of. In my case I built it with chine logs but the planks could easily be joined with glass tape using the stitch and glue method. I don't have any worries car-topping it, it's got more road miles on it than wet miles.

- there are lots of choices . . .
