Agree in spades. It's never occured to me to paddle, row or sail without a PFD. Have to admit though, I have sometimes travel in motor boats without one.

I recommend learning to float properly; might not help in a blow but it is easy to do. The position is different for each person so spend five minutes figuring what position you have to float in without using any effort to stay up for breathing. In my case I have to bend my legs at the knees and put my hands behind my head; took a while to figure that out but I can sleep in that position if the water's calm enough. A nice thing to know . . .
