Off Topic: Missing Kayaker

"The family told Coast Guard officials he is an experienced kayaker who rarely wears a life jacket."
Seems to me (without wishing to disrespect the man or his family), not wearing a life jacket contradicts labeling him 'an experienced kayaker.'
