My kayak's back band (immersion Research) began to suffer serious rust on the adjustment mechanism, so not being a slave to I just tossed it out. I found that the lip on the back of my seat kept me from sliding off the back, and never replaced the back band. Works for me. If you don't slide off your seat, you may not need a back band.

I do like my Astral PFD. It just needs one more exterior pocket.
