: Now that's just downright humbling. Exquisite work!
: Do you route a shallow 1/16" recess (flame shaped) into the
: strips and then glue in the pinstripes and claro veneer? If so,
: how do you control the depth of cut on a curved surface? I'd
: love to see some pics of the early veneering stage.
: Sure glad I posted my launch YESTERDAY.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the good question.

In wanted to keep it a strip kayak so all the flames are created by rolling beveled 1/4"strips. The claro walnut is the same.
There is no stain or veneer. I was able to buy a single piece of figured redwood 19" x 28"- 1 1/8" thick. This piece of redwood
was dark on one edge and lighter on the other edge, this created the light and dark flames. The rolling bevel was sanded
because of the irregular grain, it could not be planed.

I started by building a sub-deck made from strips of scrap pine attached to the top of the plywood stations.
stations were re-drawn to accommadate the extra thickness of the sub-deck.

A full-size paper flame pattern was taped to the sub-deck. This sub-deck is used for support of the small pieces.

I glued-in overlength redwood strips on the paper patterns, redrawing the flames as I progressed.

Then laid down black vinyl pinstriping tape to smooth out the flame design.

Then jigsawed following the edge of the tape -through the redwood flames and also into the sub-deck.
It was necessary to repair the sub-deck.

Then added the first white pine pinstripe, followed by the second cedar pinstripe.

After the flames were complete, fill in the remainder with claro walnut.

The kayak was built over two winters in the basement since my main workshop is only heated in the winter and A/C in the winter.
