: . . . As I write this, I just came in from gluing one of the scarf

: III.

: I have to go to Edmonton anyway and I'm thinking I'm getting closer

: If I do, I'll buy a bunch and have it on hand for the next

: Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't worry about scarfing, it is quick and easy and let's me use much cheaper materials effectively. Recently I started using a bench sander instead of a miter saw to cut the bevels, I find that faster and more accurate, and I use a simple jig for gluing.

I use Titebond III exclusively for scarf joints in solid wood and find it is excellent because of its quick grab and water cleanup. For scarf ratios of 6:1 and longer it is stronger than the wood for most woods, certainly so for ratios 10:1 and up, and I can go as low as 4:1 with cedar and pine; I have to be careful the glue does not get absorbed by the end grain at such coarse angles and the gluing jig is essential to stop the joint sliding apart. I don't Titebond III below the waterline and it has the disadvantage that it will not glue to its dried form so repairs can be difficult, but I have never seen a failed scarfed joint.
