Thanks again guys,
Seems there's a few options out there, good info! glad I asked and didn't just keep snapping strips and swearing ;)
Going to first see if I can scrounge me up a heat gun :)

Also seeing one of those links up there, the one about taming unruly strips, the section in there about hand planing strips made me feel better. Hand planing is my plan, but I've hardly heard talk of this method so was thinking maybe I was doing something really wrong by not bead and coving. Budget won't allow a new router..
