All that Pete says is really excellent advice. Learning the wet exit is the first thing you should do - and a dive mask or goggles and a nose clip will help immeasurably. A wet exit uses basically the same hand motions as pushing your pants down your hips.
You should also have floatation bags for your boat, of course.
