: Thanks for the advice and pics. I live in Key West, very isolated
: from other boatbuilders and from any reasonable source of
: boatbuilding lumber. I built my last two kayaks out of locally
: sourced mahogany (no longer available) and pine. The woods
: weren't light or easy to work with, but the boats turned out
: beautifully. I'm resigned to ordering from online sources such
: as Noah's or CLC for my next kayak, but it's hard to select wood
: when I can't see it in person.

Hello Rob,
I have used some Spanish Cedar and it machines and sands very well. The weight is close to WRC. The grain is similar to Mahogany and the color is like a light Mahogany. You might even think you have Mahogany, until you start sawing it and release its wonderful fragrance.
I get my Spanish Cedar from L.L. Johnson in Charlotte, Michigan. They do ship all over the country and it may be more economical than buying from Noah's or CLC.
