: Lots of fetch on the big lake.

True, but the weird thing about a seiche is that they're not necessarily wind dependent. The ones I experienced were on calm days, because of rough days, the long period just gets washed out and you can't observe it. They can happen after the waves from a wind storm dies down. Sometimes the wind creates a storm surge on one side of the lake, and after it lets up and releases, the storm surge sloshes around the basin like a wave in a bath tub. A change in air pressure can cause one too.

I think the effect is really cool and it's one of the factors that position the Great Lakes uniquely between an ocean and a lake. Here's a few cool examples of recent seiches caught with NOAA's instruments: http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/seagrant/glwlphotos/Seiche/SeicheHome.html

Plus, here's a recent surf video from Lake Superior: http://win.gs/dKZP5e Double overhead waves!
