No, I haven't had it out yet (too cold in Maine) but in my (admittedly limited) kayaking experience, I've liked having a rudder. Since I had periods when the kayak was ready for glassing but it was too cold, I decided to spend the time working on other things, including making a rudder and pedals. I figured it would be easier to install one while the deck and hull were still separate. Nick's book also suggests that, while not essential, the Auk works well with a rudder.
