Now there's an idea... I haven't seen anything similar around here, other than having a contact or two at RPI's Mechanical Engineering Dep't if I needed something only a metal working shop would be able to handle.

It actually sounds like an awesome idea for a club, actually. I can't imagine there's many kayak builders in my area (though my wife's mentioned a coworker's husband who builds either strippers or S&G in the area), but it'd be a great idea for a woodworking club. Oddly enough... there is! Northeastern Woodworker's Association, http://www.woodworker.org . I might just stop by one of their meetings... they do mention that they have a "Tool Crib" available for lending. Worst case scenario, I might build some local contacts with people who have experience... I might learn something!

I'm already watching Craigslist for solid core doors... I hear they make pretty decent workbench surfaces. I'll keep an eye out for lumber, too.
