: . . .Have you given thought to the 1/4" x 1" Red Oak trim that
: most of the big box stores sell?

As I understand it, Red oak is not as durable as white oak if it gets wet a lot. The real problem is constant exposure to weather. If you dry the boat after use and store it inside you shouldn't see any problems. But I've have been turned off by my previous experience with red oak.

I had red oak gunwales on my canoe and after a winter outside they showed some damage. After five years they were in sad shape. These were just varnished, not coated with epoxy. I couldn't find any white oak to play with so I don't have a side-by-side comparison. With the boat stored upside down, water and snow on the hull would drip down and stay on the gunwales. It seems they were always wet. The red oak decks were covered better and show almost no wear. Gunwales and decks were cut from the same board.

The replacement gunwales will be ash, and I'll cover them with epoxy before I screw them on. I found some on sale so I bought up enough for canoe gunwales and stringers for a couple of SOFs.
