Hi Stephen,
I can think of several ways to do so, all pretty dodgy methods, O_O so I won't mention them.

If you have a good belt sander, you could carefully sand down the recess but it would likely need tidying up with a chisel anyway. But that's less traumatic than chiseling the whole thing.

You could skip the recessing and make the piece lower, basically extending the recess all the way to the front edge and laying the strips all the way to the edge.
