What Bill says is correct.

The extra overall width of the coaming top has a benefit for me in that I like smallish cockpits, (20 to 22 inches long x 15 to 16 inches wide) and the extra size of the length and width at the lip make it possible to use standard medium-sized spraydecks on what is otherwise a smallish opening.

I can't think of any disadvantage really. It is just a way to keep the spraydeck on. As with all these coamings they are hidden by the spraydeck when in use. A shame really when one sees the artistry that goes into some of the coamings on this forum.
