Just pin 'em with a 1/8" dowel ... that's the general convention. I drill a hole through the outside side of the mortise, through the rib and partially through the centerboard side of the mortise ... don't drill completely through the gunwale. The skin will keep the pin from coming out. No big deal to use a drop of superglue if it makes ya sleep easier.
