I don't have your answer, but please consider using sanding dust (or some spice such as cinnimon) and silica dust to make your hatch rims BROWN. I've built them black for a long time, but brown is more consistent with the boat color, unless you're painting. The only visible part of the hatch rim, normally, is the 1/4 inch that is inside the foam ring.

Here in Fiji I could not easily get the graphite powder, so I switched to brown and love it. See photo at right.
