You're absolutely right. My board was actually a little over 1 1/2" and one face was very rough. When I ripped the wide strips, I cut so the strip with the good edge (from the smooth side of the board) was 3/4". I then ran the strip with the rough edge (from the rough face of the board) through again to shave off the rough edge. The important thing wasn't that the strips were precisely 3/4" wide, but that they were all the same width.
