One of the great things about Western Red Cedar is that it comes in so many colors. Individual boards can run from creamy to chocolate brown, but it can take several visits to lumber yards to find the right boards. I'd stick with western Red Cedar for medium and darker colors, and maybe basswood if you can't find very light cedar.

ALL the deck wood on my Guillemot S is Western Red Cedar - dark, medium and light (see photo). It just takes time picking the boards and keeping the strips separate when building.
