Just a guess, but I thought Euro paddles evolved from the feathered scoop- or spoon-bladed paddles, which were the norm about 50 years ago, and are still used by some. You might want to get intouch with the Klepper company. they are establishing a kayak museum (see http://www.klepper.com/en/museum.php) and the curator of that museum might have some insight into your quest. i see from the pictures on that web page that the paddles used with the old Kleppers were feathered with wide flat blades, with squared ends. A design that is not seen much anymore.
