: I have worked for years with hide glue, both the liquid type and the hot
: animal glue. It is wonderful glue and there is nothing better for
: pepairing old veneer, but it would be the worst possible glue for
: strip-building. It is waaaay too moisture sensitive and can crystalize
: with age. Modern glues are far superior to hide glue.

I too worked with Hyde glue when I was apprenticing in the 50's. We kept it hot in a heated container. I hated the smell.
