Guys...?
Is there any rule that says that one must immerse any paddle to full blade depth, whichever one you prefer, in order to paddle effectively? Isn't it kinda like a gas pedal in your car and not like an, on and off, light switch? You use it when you want it, to the degree that you want it?
I'm more of the opinion that Tommy was getting at the so-called, conventional wisdom of the paddling community. There are lots of conventions to which we adhere and some of them are virtually never questioned by the commnity at large.. we just do it because everyone else is doing it.
One can only wonder, then, just how did ancient paddlers progress beyond the round, driftwood paddle stick they found along the shore, if it were not for the process of questioning the purpose and seeking to better the experience.
Tommy, I think you did a good job provoking the mob to think and I, too, am looking forward to Part 2.
