I've been using water-based Varathane for years. I love the stuff for quick painting of bare wood and easy clean up. HOWEVER, I've never really gotten a good glossy finish with the stuff. IMHO, if you're looking for a quick and easy finish, use Varathane. But if you're looking for a furniture grade glossy finish, use an oil based varnish. My personal favorite is Epifanes.
