I've been quite pleased with the retractable skeg described on my web site (link below photo). I've installed it in two kayaks now and find it extremely reliable.

The only modification I would make in my next one is to move the hole at the bottom that holds the shock cord knot farther front, in the corner (farther right in this photo) for further simplification.
