When I built my first boat, I had a long time-gap in the middle, and then
had to move the stripped, but not glassed, deck from our barn to a workshop
which I could heat. I managed to break the deck aft of the cockpit, and, as
part of the repair, covered the join with an ebony veneer:
The dark wood in the main pic is Brazilian Purpleheart. The contrast with the
pine and cedar was rather greater before the pine yellowed. The cedar hasn't
changed much, the purpleheart has not darkened as much as I expected and
still looks purple in some lights. Most of the time, however, it looks
almost black.
