Re: Strip: Best way to make these strips? *LINK*

Funny. I was likewise inspired by the Chris Crafts. Must be an IN thing. Nonetheless, I did mine exactly as he described, except I cut 1/4" x 1/4" redwood using a band saw. I thought the table saw would eat too much wood and redwood is somewhat brittle... sooo....

One thing I would emphasize to get razor thin glue lines: I would carefully plane each edge of the thin strip on a flat board, then glue with some pressure. Spring clamps and staples at the forms were not sufficient (I only stapled the WRC), I used wedges to really push it in there. One thing that would concern me about glueing up a long board with a veneer, is that I doubt I could get the joint as tight with that method.

Additionally, to get clean insertions with very low angles, as on the bow, I created the angle with sand paper, the plane got me close but 100 grit finished it off.

: I was inspired by the old wooden Chris Craft boats also and mine was loosely
: based on their deck design. My thin strips were 1/8" wide and cut
: using feather boards to hold the strip in place when cutting and a plate
: board with the circular saw blade raised up through it so no there were no
: gaps around the saw blade to cause chatter breakage. I never tapered the
: 1/8" thin strips but would lay a wide strip and a thin strip together
: and taper the wide strip if needed, then glue the two strips onto the
: deck.
