Re: Material: minwax spar urethane

: I know that in the past several people have recommended Minwax Spar Varnish.
: My local hardware store has a good price right now on Minwax Spar Urethane
: Indoor/Outdoor (with UV inhibitors). Does anyone have an opinion either
: for or against this product for a cedar strip boat? Thanks.

It is on sale? Sounds like it just passed all the criteria.

There are only 2 reasons for using varnish over your epoxy: It restores the gloss remove by sanding and it blocks the UV which affects epoxy resins.

As long as it has U inhibitors and is suitable for outdoor use it will do very well. Urethane or natural resins, water or solvent base, brushed or sprayed--none of these matter very much.

If the price is good, then go for it. Urethanes tend to have a harder, more scratch-resistant finish than natural resins, so you'll get that advantage. Minwax is a reputable brand.

Enjoy!
