: I'm wondering what the feasibility is of building a large wooden sailboat?
: I'm talking something that is 30'+. Or is this something that is best left
: to fiberglass or metal hull? Are there any decent books on building larger
: sailboats? Perhaps I should be referring to a "sailing yacht"
: instead of sailboat.
: cheers
Btw, old rule is to not build a boat you can buy, but if there is nothing suitable on the market and you really want to build the boat, go for it. It won't be cheap nor quick, but it's a very rewarding experience. Just be prepared for the amount of work involved, even a simple 30 footer will likely take 5000 man hours if you're fairly quick, 10,000 to 15,000 if you're slow. Figure that a standard 80 hour work year is 2080 hours and you can see just how much of a project this really is. Also even a fairly simple job will likely cost around $20k and that can go up quickly. Displacement is costly also very light can be too. Moderately light will minimize the costs.
