Boats depreciate in value over time. If it was 25 to 30 years old when it was sold its value would certainly have declined. For it to sell at twice the materials costs means that it was worth quite a bit at one time, and slowly lost value. Add in the value of owning and using that boat over 30 years and your investment in time and labor will not seem so low.
