: I'm wondering what the feasibility is of building a large wooden sailboat?
: I'm talking something that is 30'+. Or is this something that is best left
: to fiberglass or metal hull? Are there any decent books on building larger
: sailboats? Perhaps I should be referring to a "sailing yacht"
: instead of sailboat.
: cheers
This is just my opinion but money wise I think it would be much cheaper to buy a used one then to build from scratch. For a 35' sailboat the fittings alone would probably run into the thousands, as would the sails. I know of two large sailboats built from scratch both my millionaires. One about 20 miles from me was built out of sheet steal welded together and was around 45 feet long. I used to have a poor quality tape of it being built and then transported a 100 miles to Cincinnati and the Ohio River for their trip to the Caribbean. It was a beautiful boat, teak woodwork and the latest electronics.
My ex-brother built the other boat in law. It was 50 plus feet long. Since he was an EX of my sisters I didn't feel I had the right to go see it. I'll check with my sister and see if she has any pictures of it. It ended up in FL where he lived on it until he passed away.
