: I'm wondering what the feasibility is of building a large wooden sailboat?
: I'm talking something that is 30'+. Or is this something that is best left
: to fiberglass or metal hull? Are there any decent books on building larger
: sailboats? Perhaps I should be referring to a "sailing yacht"
: instead of sailboat.
: cheers
Of course it has, and still is, being done. Just check out the woodenboat forum: http://www.woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin/upload/index.php
There are many books on the subject. Howard Chapelle, Reuel Parker, John Gardner, Thomas Firth Jones and Phillip Bolger are just a few authors you might want to check out. WoodenBoat magazine has published it's "(30, 40 or 50) Wooden Boats" catalogue of boat building plans, if you need more ideas . . . .
There are many methods for building wooden boats, too (plywood, lapstrake, carvel, strip, etc), though you might want to start out with the dinghy, first.
Fun stuff - enjoy!
