A very dark wood that has been used by several strip builders is Peruvian Walnut. Joe Greenley of Redfish Kayaks has used it extensively, and Reg Lake used it with (I think) yellow cedar to give a strong graphic effect to his King. Reg would have more to say about its properties, but he's off working/playing in Patagonia.

I don't know about general availability, but Edensaw in Port Townsend, WA, carries it.

First try stain. Then walnut , cherry or ebony.
