I was going to suggest the same thing. I've actually purchased three sweetheart Baileys (4,5 & 8) on Ebay in the last month with great luck in all three cases. I would think block planes would be a little tougher just because they tend not to be made well enough to really last.

One other thought though, have you considered having your class make their own planes as part of the class? You can pick up the blades relatively inexpensively and with a couple of simple jigs, I'll bet your class could construct them pretty quickly. Sharpening and tuning a plane is such an art that something like this would be a huge value added in my mind.
