Hi Don,
White primer. Thinned a lot so it soaks in a bit, then scraped off/lightly sanded. I got a figured white effect to a piece of ply that had been primed and painted after I used chemical paint stripper on it. The primer soaks into the softer wood and not the ring wood. The chem stripper lifts the primer off the rings but not so much out of the softer wood.

Maybe a wash of Titanium White artist grade colour would work? Thin enough the colour soaks into the softer wood and not so much on the ring wood.

For "ebonising" wood, I've used Indian Ink. That's about as permanent as you get for colour fastness. Use a chamois to rub the ink on the wood, but wear gloves!
