: I've found the 3.2 oz glass from Raka to be easy to use in double
: layers. It wets out pretty easily. I put the second layer on as
: soon as the first is tack-free, i.e, no fill coat on the first
: layer. You get a light, tough boat from this (which I have
: always thought of as the "Voldemort" layup, since
: he-who-must-not-be-named was an early, vociferous advocate of
: same). I don't see the weave unless I look awfully carefully. My
: Shooting Star has taken a couple of pretty vicious rock hits and
: the occasional paddle thwack without serious damage. It weighs
: 34# all-up, which I think is Rob's typical weight, so I'm not
: sure I saved a lot of weight--although the boat is quite light
: for its 16' 6" length.

that is a nice looking boat. BTW, and fwiw, I've used the lightweight, tightweave fiberglass at Bills recommendation, and it works great. One thing I discovered, that I think helps keep excess epoxy /weight down, is to apply both layers of cloth, especially on the inside of the boat, at the same time - as far as I can tell, it takes less epoxy, as the second layer 'soaks up' the excess I couldn't remove in the first place; it nearly wets out without any additional epoxy. Timing is 'tricky' - too tacky, and getting that cloth to lay right is challenging. My 16' Storm - weighs in at 30#. Looks pretty good, IMO, esp. considering my limited woodworking skills! :)
