I've noticed that there are
: a number of long, skinny boats, and a number of short, fat
: boats, but few short skinny boats.

There is a reason for this. Short skinny boats are relatively unstable compared to long skinny boats. In other words, for whatever degree of stability you feel is acceptable the short boat will be wider than the long one.

If you play with the stability math, this becomes evident.
