: Hi Reg,

: As you well know there are lots of advantages to having a skeg
: closer to the cockpit one big one is the skeg isn't likely to
: come out of the water on the top of a wave, where a stern
: mounted one sometimes will on which can be bad. But the physics
: are simple, a longer moment arm means the skeg can be smaller
: for the same amount of force and a smaller skeg/slot will have
: less drag. I did not say this is better, just has the potential
: of less drag.

: I don't like skegs or rudders if I can help it, so am not going
: built a test boat to try something I don't like to start with,
: specially since I don't do this for profit.

: 4000 mark, someone has to lead, might as well be me :)

: Bill H.

Nope, like I said you need to try this experientally to begin to understand it. Your physics are misapplied.

One more time. At speed the bow pressure increases and the pressure in the stern decreases. This makes the most effective part of a turning or correcting stroke in the rear quadrant. The last thing you want to do is lock up the stern adding resistance to your turning or correcting stroke.

You will need to try it, if only by taping a small piece of wood under the hull in various places.

When the bird and the book disagree, believe the bird.

Best,

Reg
