Sounds like you came across this before (and thank you!). But I just wanted to add a few notes.
It took me two solid days to sew the skin on this way. There are holes that had to be drilled every 1 inch (downwards at about a 45 so they come out at the back corner of the inwale). Plus for every single hole you have to pass 6-12' of line through. Adding it all up it is WAY more work than staples.
With that said, for this project where I didn't want to have any metal in the boat, and I was worried about the cedar splitting, sewing was the right choice for me.

I am really happy with the look and very glad I did it, but man that was a lot of work. Oh and if you go this route, buy some high friction finger guard tape, you can get it at Lee Valley Tools or, for cheaper, veterinary supply shops (its called vet tape there, used a lot on horses), put a few wraps on the joints of your index and pinkie finger on both hands. This way you still have the dexterity to tie knots and can pull the cord really taught but the twine wont saw through your fingers.. which hurts.. a lot... trust me.

: I am looking for different ways to attach the fabric to the
: gunwales of a single person SOF canoe. I am really looking for
: something "aesthetically pleasing" but would like to
: see what others have done on there canoes. I have seen beautiful
: work done by Dave Gentry, Kudzu, David Bynoe and many others.
: Google does not bring up very much in the way of pictures so if
: you have a picture, blog or an idea I would like to hear about
: it.

: Getting ready for winter in PA, Thanks!
