Dan,
I'm not sure if you've seen this "Compare Our Boats!" feature at CLC's website, but it comes in handy - http://www.clcboats.com/shop/boatcomparison.html. I'm 6'6", wear size 15 shoes, and outweigh you by about 70 pounds. The first boat I built was a Great Auk with plans from Nick's first book. I slightly modified the deck to account for the size of my feet, and it's been a good boat. You can modify the deck on any design to suit your needs. I've also built a couple of 14' Auks for family members that I sometimes get into. They sit low in the water because of my weight, but I am comfortable in them. Last spring I finished a Spring Run L, and it's by far my favorite boat (I haven't even touched my other boats this year.) - http://www.redfishkayak.com/spring_run.htm. For comfort, handling, and styling, it beat my Auks hands-down. I do have plans to build other boats, but haven't gotten to them yet. The one thing I'm a little leery of is building a boat with a beam less than 23-24" just because I'm top-heavy in the way that I'm built and proper balance becomes an issue sometimes.

You'll be thrilled with any boat that you build. The best thing you can do for yourself is to find somebody in your area who has built a boat that you're interested in. Contact him/her and inquire about a test-paddle. There are builders and dealers just about everywhere, and this community is always helpful. If you need advice on any topic throughout your build, the archives at this site contain a wealth of knowledge. If I can be of any help, I live in upstate NY - Elmira.
