Down here we have Ballyhoo which do the same. They are very long needle-nosed fish and we use them for bait. Likewise flying fish make great bait and also great eating! Flying fish will fly for 50 yards or more. It's really amazing to watch.

Yesterday at Magen's Bay there was a massive bait ball and the Tarpon were rounding them up. They would all swarm together and you could see when a tarpon headed through them because the dark mass would separate. At one point they formed a question mark shape and then they merged back together into a ball. The pellicans were feasting as well as the tarpon. Poor little guys were getting attacked from all angles.
