Skin-on-Frame: Yost Sea Cruiser R - My First Kayak Build *PIC*

I've attached a photo of my first kayak build. The frame is almost finished - just needs some varnish for the cross sections and stem/stern plates and some Danish oil for the keel, gunwales and chines. My salvaged meranti/mahogony, 40 years old, wooden window frames provided the wood for the long items (10 butt joints necessary to get 18ft. lengths). As a result the frame is quite a bit heavier than if built with 50% lighter cedar or redwood.

I've also added a commercial Perception backrest and home made thigh grips and footrests - I enjoy a comfortable paddle ;-)

The hull will be covered with orange 550 gsm polyester reinforced PVC. The deck will be the same type material but 200 gsm.

Cheers TomR
